Roy Aplin at

Prior to judging
the inter-club competition, Roy Aplin gave a very
interesting and thought provoking talk.
Roy opened his
presentation by showing a taxidermied budgerigar that he had
made from cinnamon grey green that was his
Best Young
Bird in Show at the 2007 BS Club Show. He said that
in his view, at most shows we seem to be getting away from
the ideal. At the 2019 Club Show for instance, the four
major winners were four different types of bird with the
grey best in show being as close to the ideal as we can get.
“As judges, we are all as bad as each other – head
quality takes over and we ignore deportment, balance and
style etc.” said Roy.
Roy spoke about
how proud he was to produce the WBO Ideal in 2008 and if he
had the opportunity to revise it, the only change he would
male would be to increase the feathering above and over the
cere.
Roy added,
“I can put down on paper in pencil what I want – I just
can’t breed it.”
About buying
birds, Roy suggested that spending lots on money does not
always work. The challenge is putting two birds together and
breeding young better than the original pair and are what
you are after. He added, “We select birds to increase
feather length and improve depth on mask, so it is hardly
surprising that flight and tail feathers become long as
well.”
2018 Inter-Club
Competition

The Society held its Inter-Club Competition which
was well supported with four societies participating
by sending a team of 12 birds to compete in the 12
classes provided. The guest speaker and judge was
Trevor Terheege, a well known successful breeder,
exhibitor and judge. Trevor gave an informative
power point presentation about the progression of
the initial pet type bird of yesteryear to the
modern day exhibition budgerigar.
After lunch Trevor judged the show and for the third
year running South Hants BS won the competition with
39 points followed by the new entry from Mid Essex
BS who scored with 35 points. South Eastern BC
received 25 points and Sussex BS was fourth with 17
points. The winning team also won the £50 prize
money. |

2017
Inter-Club Competition
Sunday, 19th November 2017, Smallfield
The Society held its Inter-Club Competition
which was well supported with four societies participating
by sending a team of 12 birds to compete in the 12 classes
provided. This event had an international flavour to it as
the guest speaker was Maarten Heylen, a successful breeder
and exhibitor from Belgium who was accompanied by Bob Wilson
from the USA. Maarten gave an informative power point
presentation about his feeding method using the Pro Line
products supplied by a Belgian company that he works for.
Maarten also talked about his birds, the blood lines that he
uses and his pairings.
After lunch Maarten judged the show and for
the second year running South Hants BS won the competition
with 45 points followed by South Eastern BC with 28 points.
Sussex BS was third with 22 points followed by Croydon BS
with 20 points. The winning team also won the £50 prize
money.

Inter-Club Competition
1st November 2015, Smallfield
On Sunday, 1st November
2015, London & Southern Counties BS held its Inter-Club
competition. The 5 Clubs that participated were: Croydon BS,
South Hampshire BS, South Eastern BS, Hastings BS and Sussex
BS.
Each team consisted of 12
colour classes of birds bought along from various club
members of each Society. The Judge for the event was David
Woan. After judging David talked through the results and his
reasons for the positions of the birds explaining to those
present. He pointed out the various faults as well as the
desirable features of the birds in front of him.
Each of the 12 colours
had a class of 5 exhibits with the winner receiving 5 points
down to 1 point for 5th place. Overall Hastings BS won the
event with a total of (46) points followed by South Hants BS
(43pts), South Eastern BS (40pts), Sussex BS (26 pts),
Croydon BS (20 pts). The prize of £50 was awarded to the
Hastings team.
